Jahseh Onfroy was born in Plantation, Florida, in 1998 and began writing music after release from juvenile detention, launching his career on SoundCloud in 2013 with guitar-heavy, distorted tracks that borrowed from grunge and third-wave emo. He co-founded the underground collective Members Only in 2014 and became a central figure in the SoundCloud rap scene before his 2016 single "Look at Me!" broke him into the mainstream. His debut album 17 peaked at number two on the Billboard 200 in 2017, followed by ?, which debuted at number one in 2018 and spawned "Sad!", a track that posthumously hit number one and earned diamond certification. Legal troubles shadowed him throughout - most notably 2016 battery charges - splitting opinion on whether his legacy is defined by alleged violence or by signs of redemption late in his short life. On June 18, 2018, four men ambushed and killed him during a robbery in Deerfield Beach; all were convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life without parole in 2023.
