Something wrong? He bent hip-hop toward melody and confession when the genre still prized toughness, then spent two decades proving you could dominate the charts, rewrite the sound every album, and still make the headlines more volatile than the music.

Born in Atlanta and raised in Chicago, Kanye Omari West dropped out of college to produce beats, crafting the "chipmunk soul" sound that got him noticed at Jay-Z's Roc-A-Fella Records. He released The College Dropout in 2004 and Late Registration in 2005, the latter his first of eleven US Billboard 200 number-ones, and became the first rapper to top the Hot 100 across three decades with singles like "Gold Digger" and "Stronger". Six of his albums landed on Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Albums of All Time" list, and he won 24 Grammys while selling 160 million records. He married Kim Kardashian in 2014, launched the Yeezy line with Adidas, and ran an independent presidential campaign in 2020. In 2022 he expressed antisemitic views and sympathized with Nazi ideology, losing sponsors and partnerships before issuing an official apology in 2026.
