Born Wilhelm Ernst Wenders on 14 August 1945, he emerged as a major figure of New German Cinema with his feature debut Summer in the City in 1970. He built his reputation on a trilogy of drifter films — Alice in the Cities (1974), The Wrong Move (1975), and Kings of the Road (1976) — that mapped loneliness across Europe's margins. Paris, Texas (1984) won him the Palme d'Or and a BAFTA, then Wings of Desire (1987) took Cannes Best Director for its angels watching over a divided Berlin.
