German politician (1914–1999)
He ran East Germany's government for most of two decades, holding the top administrative post through the Cold War's sharpest years and into the twilight before the Wall came down.
Wilhelm Stoph was born on 9 July 1914 in Germany. He became Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the German Democratic Republic in 1964, a position he held until 1973. From 1973 to 1976 he served as chairman of the State Council, then returned to lead the Council of Ministers again in 1976. He remained in that role until 1989, the year the Berlin Wall fell and the East German state began its final unraveling. Stoph died on 13 April 1999.
