About this person
Salvatore "Toto" Cutugno was born on 7 July 1943 and built a career as a pop singer-songwriter and television presenter across decades. His 1983 album and its title track "L'Italiano" broke through worldwide, cementing him as a voice of Italian pop abroad. In 1990 he won the Eurovision Song Contest in Zagreb with "Insieme: 1992", writing both words and music himself. Over the years he sold over 100 million records and became what observers called one of Italy's most successful songwriters of all time. He died on 22 August 2023, leaving behind a catalog that had made him a symbol of Italian melody on a global scale.
