Salvatore "Toto" Cutugno was born on 7 July 1943 and built a career as a pop singer-songwriter and television presenter across decades. His 1983 album and its title track "L'Italiano" broke through worldwide, cementing him as a voice of Italian pop abroad. In 1990 he won the Eurovision Song Contest in Zagreb with "Insieme: 1992", writing both words and music himself.
