American film and theater actor (1926-2009)
The second son of Charlie Chaplin who stepped out of that long shadow to win a Tony on Broadway — not for comedy, but as the romantic lead in Bells Are Ringing.
Sydney Earl Chaplin was born March 30, 1926, to Charlie Chaplin and Lita Grey. He appeared in his father's Limelight in 1952, one of his major film roles, but the stage became his own ground. In 1957 he won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical for Bells Are Ringing, a performance that marked him as more than a famous name's heir. He spent decades working in theater and film until his death on March 3, 2009, three weeks shy of his 83rd birthday.
