Ottoman prince and pretender at the throne
A prince who lost a civil war and spent the rest of his life as a captive bargaining chip — passed between the Knights of Rhodes, the Mamluks, and the Pope, who all saw more value in keeping him alive than letting him go.
Cem Sultan was born 22 December 1459, the third son of Mehmed II and younger half-brother to Bayezid II. When Bayezid took the throne, Cem challenged him and lost. He fled to Egypt, then to the Knights Hospitaller on Rhodes, who held him not as a guest but as leverage against the Ottoman court. Eventually he was handed to the Pope in Rome, where he remained until his death on 25 February 1495. He never saw Istanbul again.
