About this person

Stefanie Maria Graf showed up at the 1983 French Open aged 13, the youngest player in the main draw. Four years later she won it, breaking the decade-long grip of Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova. The 1988 season was the peak: Golden Slam, world No. 1, untouchable. Injuries and Monica Seles slowed her in the early 1990s, then Seles was stabbed in 1993 and Graf returned to the top for several more years. She won her 22nd and final major at Roland Garros in 1999, reached the Wimbledon final, and retired at 30. Her forehand and footwork set the template for the baseline game that still dominates, and Billie Jean King called her the greatest women's player of all time.
