10th century Byzantine Emperor
A Byzantine emperor who reigned four years, died at twenty-five under murky circumstances, and left two small sons who would grow into some of Byzantium's most formidable rulers.
Romanos inherited the throne in 959 at twenty-one, stepping into his father Constantine VII's seat with little warning of how brief his own run would be. For four years he held the empire, then died suddenly on 15 March 963 — the cause never clarified, the timing strange enough to feed whispers. His wife Theophano stood between the throne and their young sons, Basil II and Constantine VIII, who would not take power until 976, thirteen years after their father vanished from the scene.
