About this person

Rodrigo Hernández Cascante came through Villarreal's academy and made his first-team debut in December 2015. After a season at Atlético Madrid that brought a UEFA Super Cup, Pep Guardiola signed him for Manchester City in 2019 for £62.6 million. At City he became the axis of four consecutive Premier League titles and the 2022-23 treble, scoring the only goal in the Champions League final against Inter Milan and again in the Club World Cup final months later. He debuted for Spain in 2018 and by 2023 had won the Nations League, named best player of the finals. At Euro 2024 he was named Player of the Tournament as Spain lifted the title. That autumn he won the 2024 Ballon d'Or - the first defensive midfielder since Lothar Matthäus in 1990 to claim it, and the first City player ever. At the 2026 World Cup, wearing the captain's armband, he won the Golden Ball as Spain took their second title.
