About this person
Born in Montana in 1977 to parents of German, Czech, and Swedish ancestry, Rachel Dolezal earned degrees from Belhaven University and Howard University, where she later sued unsuccessfully for what she claimed was discrimination against her as a White woman. She darkened her skin, permed her hair, and began presenting herself as Black - a shift that carried her into teaching Africana studies at Eastern Washington University in 2010 and leadership roles in Spokane's NAACP chapter and police ombudsman commission by 2014. After she reported incidents of racist harassment that law enforcement couldn't substantiate, a reporter traced inconsistencies in her story, located her biological parents, and published their account in June 2015. The fallout was immediate: she lost all three positions, acknowledged being "born white to white parents" while maintaining she identified as Black, and later faced welfare fraud charges that were resolved through a diversion agreement requiring repayment and community service.
