Born December 17, 1987, Chelsea Manning worked as an intelligence analyst for a US Army unit in Iraq in 2009, where access to classified databases put diplomatic cables, war logs, and airstrike footage within reach. In early 2010 she leaked the material to WikiLeaks, then confided in an online acquaintance who tipped off the Army - Manning was arrested in May. Held in de facto solitary confinement at Quantico for months, she faced 22 charges including aiding the enemy, which carried a possible death sentence. In 2013 she pleaded guilty to some charges, was convicted of 17 others, and drew 35 years at Fort Leavenworth. President Obama commuted her sentence in January 2017 after she had served nearly seven years. She came out as a trans woman in 2013, ran unsuccessfully for US Senate in Maryland in 2018, and spent a year jailed for contempt in 2019-2020 for refusing to testify against Julian Assange before a grand jury.
