Emperor of the Qin Dynasty
The second emperor of China's Qin dynasty came to power through palace intrigue, watched his chief advisor kill the rightful heir, then spent three years as a puppet before being ordered to end his own life.
Huhai, son of Qin Shi Huang, was placed on the throne in 210 BC by the officials Li Si and Zhao Gao, who bypassed his brother Fusu, the designated successor. After Huhai's ascension, both Fusu and the general Meng Tian were killed on Li and Zhao's orders — whether the new emperor participated in the assassinations remains disputed. Zhao Gao dominated the reign completely; Qin Er Shi functioned as a weak figurehead. In 207 BC, Zhao Gao forced him to commit suicide. The empire had deteriorated so sharply that his successor Ziying could claim only the title of king.
