Born 17 January 1965, Pu Zhiqiang built a practice at the Huayi Law Firm that put him on a collision course with power. He became an executive partner and a prominent voice in the Weiquan movement, the loose network of lawyers and activists pushing back against official overreach. The cases he chose - defending speech, challenging official narratives - made him a person of interest to state security. He has been detained and questioned multiple times.
