Chen Qiushi was born 19 September 1985 and trained as a lawyer before turning his camera on power. In 2019 he covered the Hong Kong protests, catching attention for reports that didn't parrot the party line. When COVID-19 erupted in Wuhan, he went in and kept filming - crowded hospitals, official fumbles, the unfiltered ground truth. On 6 February 2020 he vanished. The government told his family it was quarantine; press-freedom groups called it detention and demanded proof of life. He reappeared in September 2021, alive but silent on what happened in between.
