Zhang Zhan was born on 2 September 1983 and practiced law before turning to independent journalism. She traveled to Wuhan in February 2020 during lockdown and began filming the city's conditions and questioning how authorities were handling the COVID-19 crisis. Detained in May 2020, she was sentenced that December to four years on charges of "picking quarrels and provoking trouble" - the first such conviction among at least ten journalists arrested for coronavirus reporting. In custody she launched an intermittent hunger strike that brought her to the edge of death by late 2021, prompting calls from the UN, the US government, and Reporters without Borders for her release. She completed her sentence in May 2024, only to be arrested again in August and reportedly sentenced to four more years.
