Born 12 February 1932 to King Olav V and Princess Märtha of Sweden, Astrid Maud Ingeborg grew up between her elder sister Ragnhild and younger brother Harald. When her mother died in 1954, she took on first lady duties at twenty-two, serving beside her grandfather King Haakon VII and then her father until Harald's wedding in 1968 ended the assignment. She married Johan Martin Ferner in 1961 and raised five children.
