A three-year-old who inherited the Scottish crown without ever setting foot in her kingdom. Margaret's death at seven, en route from Norway to claim her throne, opened the succession crisis that would consume Scotland for decades.
Margaret was born in March or April 1283, daughter of King Eric II of Norway and Margaret of Scotland. By 1286 her maternal grandfather Alexander III had outlived all other descendants, and she was recognized as heir presumptive to Scotland. When Alexander died that year and his posthumous child was stillborn, the crown passed to Margaret — still a toddler in Norway. Her father and Scottish leaders arranged her marriage to Edward of Caernarfon, son of England's King Edward I, attempting to bind the realms.
