King of Denmark, Norway and Sweden
He held three crowns at once — Denmark, Norway, and Sweden — but Sweden slipped through his fingers after four years. The Kalmar Union, that fragile knot binding Scandinavia, frayed under him even as he spent a reign trying to cinch it tighter.
Born Johannes on 2 February 1455, Hans became King of Denmark in 1482, Norway in 1483, and at last Sweden in 1497 — the triple crown his ancestors had worn. He also ruled Schleswig and Holstein jointly with his brother Frederick. His reign turned on three fixed aims: restore the Kalmar Union binding the Scandinavian kingdoms, break the Hanseatic League's grip on trade, and forge a consolidated Danish throne with real teeth. Sweden broke away in 1501. He died 20 February 1513, still king in two realms, the third beyond reach.
