He stitched three crowns together through a mixture of dynastic timing and political maneuver, then watched one of them slip away. Christian I held Denmark, Norway, and briefly Sweden under the Kalmar Union before losing the north in battle — but his real legacy was founding a royal house that would rule Scandinavia for centuries.
Born a German noble in February 1426, Christian entered a power vacuum when King Christopher died without an heir in 1448. While Sweden elected Karl Knutsson and tried to lead the union themselves, the counts of Holstein maneuvered the Danish Privy Council into appointing Christian king of Denmark. He took Norway's throne in 1450 and Sweden's in 1457, briefly reuniting the Kalmar Union. But Sweden broke away in 1464, and his attempt to reclaim it ended in defeat at the Battle of Brunkeberg in 1471 against regent Sten Sture the Elder.
