Born deaf at Windsor Castle in 1885, a great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria, Alice married Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark in 1903 and spent decades pinballing between exile and restoration as Greek politics convulsed. In 1930 she was diagnosed with schizophrenia and committed to a Swiss sanatorium; she never lived with her husband again.
