Born in 1882, seventh child of King George I of Greece and a grandson of Denmark's Christian IX, Andrew trained for the army early and saw real combat in the Balkan Wars. When his father was assassinated in 1913 and his brother Constantine took the throne, Constantine's World War I neutrality triggered abdication and exile for the family. They returned, and Andrew commanded as a Major General in the Greco-Turkish War of 1919–1922, but Greece lost badly. Andrew took part of the blame and was exiled again in 1922, settling in France.
