Consort of the Netherlands (1980 - 2002)
He entered Dutch public life as the German diplomat who married the future queen — a pairing that drew sharp protest in a country still raw from occupation. The controversy faded; the role endured for two decades.
Born Klaus-Georg Wilhelm Otto Friedrich Gerd von Amsberg on 6 September 1926, he served as a West German diplomat and deputy ambassador to Ivory Coast before meeting Princess Beatrix on New Year's Eve 1963. They married in 1966 amid public tension over his German origins in a Netherlands barely twenty years past the war. When Beatrix ascended to the throne on 30 April 1980, he became Prince of the Netherlands — a consort position he held through twenty-two years until his death on 6 October 2002.
