He held the papacy for seven months, traveled to Reims to crown a Frankish king as emperor, then returned to Rome and died. The brevity left almost no mark beyond the ritual.

Biography

About

Stephen came from Roman nobility and became bishop of Rome in June 816. That October he journeyed north to Reims, where he crowned Louis the Pious as emperor and secured the release of Roman political prisoners held in Frankish custody. He made his way back through Ravenna in November. By January 817 he was dead, his reign among the shortest in papal history.
