Pope of the Catholic Church from 795 to 816 (born 750–816)
He placed the imperial crown on Charlemagne's head on Christmas Day 800, reviving the concept of a Roman Emperor in the West and setting off centuries of tension between Rome and Constantinople.
Leo became bishop of Rome on 26 December 795, inheriting enemies loyal to his predecessor Adrian I. When those supporters turned on him, Charlemagne's protection kept him in power. In return, Leo crowned Charlemagne emperor, a move that strengthened the Frankish king's position but earned no approval in Constantinople. The Byzantines, preoccupied with their own borders, couldn't muster serious opposition. Leo ruled the Papal States until his death on 12 June 816, having reshaped the political architecture of medieval Europe with a single ceremonial act.
