Leo V was born at Priapi near Ardea and rose through the priesthood without becoming a cardinal of Rome. Elected pope after Benedict IV's death in 903, he issued a tax-exemption bull for the canons of Bologna during a pontificate that lasted a little over two months. Then Christopher, cardinal-priest of San Lorenzo in Damaso, captured him, threw him in prison, and claimed the papacy for himself.
