The pope who tutored a future emperor and then spent years prodding him to keep his word. Honorius III blessed the Dominicans and Franciscans when they were just starting out, and pushed hard for a crusade that wouldn't quite deliver.
Cencio Savelli rose through church administration at Santa Maria Maggiore, eventually serving as Camerlengo before taking on an unusual assignment in 1197: tutoring the young Frederick II. Elected pope in July 1216, he inherited plans for the Fifth Crusade and made it his central project, repeatedly pressing King Andrew II of Hungary and his former pupil, now Emperor Frederick II, to honor their vows and join the campaign.
