Pope
The bishop of Rome for thirteen years in the sixth century, holding the papacy through a stretch when the office meant navigating Gothic wars and Byzantine pressure from a throne that had lost half its old power.
Born Catelinus, he became Pope John III on 17 July 561. His pontificate stretched thirteen years, ending with his death on 13 July 574. He led the church through the closing decades of Late Antiquity, a bishop in an age when Rome itself was no longer the center of the world.
