7th-century pope
A seventh-century pope who spent his fifteen-year reign trying to smooth over a theological rift with Constantinople that Rome had already condemned—diplomacy in a losing position.
Vitalian became bishop of Rome on 30 July 657 and inherited a church at odds with the imperial government over Monothelitism, a doctrine Rome rejected. He took a conciliatory line, cultivating a working relationship with Emperor Constans II, who traveled to Rome and presented him with gifts. The effort at rapprochement couldn't prevent the Archbishopric of Ravenna from breaking away from papal authority during his tenure. He died on 27 January 672, after fifteen years of holding a middle course that satisfied neither side fully.
