Pope
A ninth-century pope whose wife and daughters were murdered by supporters of the same Italian king he'd tried to befriend.
Born in 792, Adrian II became bishop of Rome in 867, inheriting the firm diplomatic line of his predecessor Nicholas I. He sought good relations with Louis II of Italy but found himself under surveillance instead. Louis' supporters killed Adrian's wife and daughters — a tragedy that marked his papacy with loss even as he continued to govern the Papal States. He died on 14 December 872.
