Swiss chemist (1889-1971)
He cracked the structure of vitamins when the molecules were still mostly mystery — work that earned a Nobel and helped turn nutrition from guesswork into chemistry.
Paul Karrer was born on 21 April 1889 and built his career as a Swiss organic chemist at a time when the chemical nature of vitamins remained largely unknown. His research focused on unraveling their molecular structures, a painstaking effort that required both precision and insight. The work proved significant enough that he and British chemist Norman Haworth shared the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1937. He continued in the field until his death on 18 June 1971, leaving behind a body of research that had turned essential nutrients into understood compounds.
