She's Princess Aura to the cult-film crowd, but in Italy she's simply one of the best-known actresses of her generation — a face that moved through decades of Italian cinema without getting stuck in one gear.
Born Francesca Romana Rivelli on 9 March 1955, she took the name Ornella Muti and built a career that refused to settle. She worked across genres, moving between the hands of Italian directors like Damiano Damiani, Mario Monicelli, Dino Risi, Marco Ferreri, Carlo Verdone, Ettore Scola, Francesca Archibugi, Paolo Virzì, Umberto Lenzi, and Francesco Nuti. In 1980 she landed the role of Princess Aura in Flash Gordon, the science fiction film that became a cult touchstone and gave her a foothold outside Italy. The range kept her working, the directors kept her sharp, and the name stuck.
