Biography
About
Born in New York in 1946, Stone left Yale to enlist in the Army in 1967, serving in the 25th Infantry and 1st Cavalry Divisions in Vietnam, where he was wounded twice and earned a Bronze Star for valor. He started as a screenwriter, winning his first Oscar for Midnight Express in 1978 and scripting Conan the Barbarian and Scarface before stepping behind the camera. Platoon in 1986 won him Best Director and Best Picture, followed by a second directing Oscar for Born on the Fourth of July three years later.
