She turned up seven months pregnant in a Lycra catsuit, rapping "Buffalo Stance" on Top of the Pops in 1989, and the British public couldn't look away. Neneh Cherry's first single made her unavoidable - a Swedish ex-punk with a voice that slid between singing and flow before anyone called it that.

About this person

Born Neneh Mariann Karlsson in 1964, she spent her early twenties in London's post-punk circuit, playing with the Slits and Rip Rig + Panic. Raw Like Sushi arrived in 1989 and climbed to number two in the UK, driven entirely by "Buffalo Stance" going worldwide. Homebrew followed in 1992, then Man in 1996, before a long gap until Blank Project in 2014. She formed cirKus in 2006, released The Cherry Thing with the Thing in 2012, and put out The Versions in 2022. Two Brit Awards, an MTV Europe Music Award with Youssou N'Dour, and a Grammy nomination line the shelf.
