Nebuchadnezzar I reigned for 22 years as the fourth king of the Second Dynasty of Isin and Fourth Dynasty of Babylon, the most prominent ruler that dynasty produced. His defining act was a military victory over Elam, but what secured his legacy wasn't conquest — it was recovering the cultic idol of Marduk, Babylon's chief deity, which the Elamites had carried off. In a world where a god's physical presence anchored a city's identity and fortune, bringing Marduk home was both political triumph and cosmic restoration.
