The last pharaoh of Egypt's New Kingdom watched his authority splinter in real time. By Year 19 of Ramesses XI's reign, the state had cracked so badly they declared a "Renaissance" era and started counting years over — a reboot that fooled no one.
Menmaatre Ramesses XI took the throne in 1106 BC and held it for at least 29 years, possibly longer — some scholars argue for 33. The exact end, somewhere between 1078 and 1068 BC, remains blurred by the chaos of his final years. His highest known date sits at Year 10 of the wḥm-mswt, the "Renaissance" era declared midway through his reign, which corresponds to his Year 28. A graffito places the general and High Priest of Amun Piankh back in Thebes from a Nubian campaign on day 23 of III Shemu — three days into what would have been Ramesses XI's 29th year.
