Muharrem İnce was born 4 May 1964 and spent years as a physics teacher and school principal in Yalova before entering parliament as a CHP MP in the early 2000s, serving four terms and rising to parliamentary group deputy chairman from 2010 to 2014. He challenged party leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu twice - in 2014 after a presidential loss, and again in 2018 - losing both times but building a reputation as an internal rebel. That year the party tapped him as its presidential candidate anyway, and he came second with just over 30 percent against Erdoğan's 53, the opposition's strongest showing in years. By May 2021 he'd left to found the Homeland Party, a vehicle of his own. In 2023 he declared another presidential run as an independent, then suspended his campaign before election day and quietly returned to the CHP in July 2025.
