About this person

Born in Istanbul in 1954, Erdoğan climbed through local Islamist politics to win the mayorship in 1994, then spent four months in prison in 1998 for reciting a poem the state called incitement. Released in 1999, he co-founded the Justice and Development Party, dropped the overtly Islamist line, and rode economic recovery and EU talks to the prime minister's office in 2003. A decade of growth and reduced military meddling gave way to something harder: peace talks with Kurdish militants collapsed in 2015, and his first directly elected presidency brought democratic backsliding, a redrawn system that expanded executive power, and a foreign policy of proxy wars in Syria and Libya. By 2025 he had blocked NATO expansion, brokered Black Sea grain deals during the Ukraine invasion, and overseen the arrest of Istanbul's opposition mayor ahead of the next election - silencing the likeliest challenger as streets filled again.
