About

Born in Istanbul in 1954, Erdoğan climbed through local Islamist politics to win the mayorship in 1994, then spent four months in prison in 1998 for reciting a poem the state called incitement. Released in 1999, he co-founded the Justice and Development Party, dropped the overtly Islamist line, and rode economic recovery and EU talks to the prime minister's office in 2003. A decade of growth and reduced military meddling gave way to something harder: peace talks with Kurdish militants collapsed in 2015, and his first directly elected presidency brought democratic backsliding, a redrawn system…
