Ekrem İmamoğlu was born in Akçaabat on 4 June 1970 and moved to Istanbul in 1987, eventually working in his family's construction business after degrees in business administration and human resource management from Istanbul University. He joined the Republican People's Party in 2008, served as mayor of Beylikdüzü from 2014, and in March 2019 pulled off an upset win for Istanbul's top job against the ruling party's candidate Binali Yıldırım. When authorities annulled that election and ordered a repeat in June, he won again by a wider margin. His first term brought milk programs for malnourished children, cheaper public transport for some residents, a cleanup of the Golden Horn, and electric vehicles on the Princes' Islands. Reelected in 2024, he was named the CHP's presidential candidate in a one-person primary on 23 March 2025 - the same day he was arrested on corruption and racketeering charges, his university diploma canceled, and his mayoral powers suspended. He denies everything from Marmara Prison, where he faces over 10 cases seeking more than 2,000 years, while protests roll through Turkish cities and his political future hangs on the trials ahead.
