Moïse Tshombe was born into a Lunda aristocratic family on 10 November 1919 and built a business career in Katanga Province before cofounding the pro-Western CONAKAT party in 1958. When Congo gained independence in June 1960, he became president of autonomous Katanga and immediately clashed with leftist prime minister Patrice Lumumba, declaring Katanga's independence and triggering the Congo Crisis.
