Russian polymath (1711-1765)
An 18th-century Russian who discovered Venus had an atmosphere and proved mass doesn't vanish in chemical reactions — while also writing poetry that shaped how modern Russian is spoken.
Mikhail Vasilyevich Lomonosov was born on 19 November 1711 and spent his life ranging across natural science, chemistry, physics, mineralogy, history, art, philology, and optical devices with equal intensity. He discovered the atmosphere of Venus and articulated the law of conservation of mass in chemical reactions, becoming one of the founders of modern geology. Alongside the laboratory work, he wrote poetry and influenced the formation of the modern Russian literary language. He made contributions to literature, education, and science until his death on 15 April 1765.
