About this person
Khodorkovsky climbed through the Soviet Komsomol ranks before founding Bank Menatep in 1989 and assembling Yukos during the 1990s privatization free-for-all, becoming Russia's wealthiest citizen by 2003. That same year, after launching Open Russia to strengthen civil society, he was arrested - Putin's government froze Yukos on tax charges, the company collapsed, and Khodorkovsky was convicted of fraud in 2005, sentenced to nine years, then hit with new embezzlement charges in 2010 extending his term to 2014. The European Court found violations in his treatment but stopped short of calling the prosecution purely political, though Amnesty International named him a prisoner of conscience. Pardoned in December 2013 after German diplomatic pressure, he flew straight to Switzerland, re-launched Open Russia from exile in 2014, and settled in London by 2015 with a rebuilt fortune estimated around $500 million.
