Born in Peekskill, New York, on January 3, 1956, Gibson moved to Sydney at 12 and trained at the National Institute of Dramatic Art, where he played Romeo opposite Judy Davis. Max Rockatansky in Mad Max and Martin Riggs in Lethal Weapon made him an action fixture through the 1980s and '90s; Peter Weir's Gallipoli earned him a Best Actor award in Australia. In 1995 he produced, directed, and starred in Braveheart, taking home the Golden Globe and two Oscars—Best Director and Best Picture.
