King of Bavaria between 1848 and 1864 (1811–1864)
He took the throne mid-revolution in 1848 and steadied Bavaria when half of Europe was coming apart. While Prussia and Austria wrestled for German dominance, Maximilian spent his reign trying to keep his kingdom independent and turn Munich into something more than a royal capital.
Maximilian II became King of Bavaria on 28 November 1811, inheriting the crown in 1848 as the German Revolution tore through central Europe. He restored order quickly, then pivoted to a quieter project: preserving Bavarian sovereignty as the wars of German Unification gathered force around him. More interested in statecraft than ceremony, he poured energy into remaking Munich as a cultural and educational center rather than a monument to royal excess. He held the throne until his death on 10 March 1864, well-liked for caring more about governing than about himself.
