About

Otto Wilhelm Luitpold Adalbert Waldemar was born 27 April 1848, the second son of Maximilian II and Marie of Prussia, younger brother to Ludwig II. When Ludwig died in 1886, Otto inherited the crown, but severe mental illness had already rendered him incapable of governing. His uncle Luitpold stepped in as regent and held the role until his own death, after which Otto's cousin Ludwig took over. The arrangement persisted for nearly three decades until 1913, when the legislature passed a law allowing Ludwig to depose him — which he did, the very next day.
