Maximian ruled Rome for two decades as the muscle to Diocletian's mind, then spent his final years clawing back power in a string of betrayals — abdicating twice, rebelling against his own son, and finally attempting to overthrow his son-in-law before dying by forced suicide.
Born around 250, Maximian rose to Caesar in 285 and Augustus the following year, sharing the throne with Diocletian in a division that sent him west to fight while his co-emperor handled strategy. He crushed Gallic rebels, beat back Germanic tribes along the Rhine, and launched a deep strike into Alamannic lands in 288, but couldn't reclaim Britain after his fleet sank in storms around 289. His campaigns wound down in 298 with piracy sweeps off Hispania and a Berber campaign in Mauretania, after which he retired to Italy and abdicated in 305 at Diocletian's urging.
