About
Mark Freuder Knopfler was born in Glasgow on 12 August 1949 and raised in Newcastle. After graduating from the University of Leeds and spending three years as a college lecturer, he co-founded Dire Straits in 1977 with his younger brother David. The band recorded six albums, including Brothers in Arms in 1985, one of the best-selling albums in history; together they moved between 100 million and 120 million records. Dire Straits disbanded in 1995, and Knopfler began a solo career that has so far yielded ten albums. He has also composed and produced film scores for nine films — among them Local…
