Brian Hugh Warner formed Marilyn Manson in 1989, naming the band and its members by fusing American female sex symbols with male serial killers. The group's mid-'90s trilogy - Portrait of an American Family, Antichrist Superstar, Mechanical Animals - delivered platinum sales and singles like "The Beautiful People" and "The Dope Show," but also congressional hearings and state legislation aimed at keeping them off public stages. After Columbine, mainstream media blamed Manson for influencing the massacre; his 2000 album Holy Wood answered directly. Eight top-ten albums and five Grammy nominations followed, alongside acting work in David Lynch's Lost Highway and a 2002 art exhibition. In 2021, Evan Rachel Wood accused him of psychological and sexual abuse; other women followed with civil suits, one later recanted and alleged pressure from Wood. Manson sued Wood for defamation, then dropped it after parts were dismissed, agreeing to pay her legal fees. A four-year criminal investigation closed in 2025 with no charges due to expired statutes and lack of evidence.
