Empress Consort of the Holy Roman Empire
She married into the Habsburg line and became Holy Roman Empress, Queen of Hungary and Bohemia, and Grand Duchess of Tuscany — a Spanish infanta who rose to the center of European power through one strategic union.
Born 24 November 1745 as an infanta of Spain, Maria Luisa entered the tangled world of Habsburg dynastic politics through marriage to Leopold II. The union made her Grand Duchess of Tuscany first, then elevated her across multiple thrones: Holy Roman Empress, German Queen, and Queen of Hungary and Bohemia when her husband ascended in 1790. She held those titles until her death on 15 May 1792, less than two years into Leopold's brief reign at the empire's helm.
