Queen consort of Spain (1549-1580)
A Habsburg who married her uncle and became Queen of Spain at twenty, dead at thirty. The marriage sealed dynastic alliances; the brevity ensured she's remembered more for the arrangement than the reign.
Born 2 November 1549, Anna of Austria entered a marriage with King Philip II of Spain — her mother's brother — a union that bound the Spanish and Austrian branches of the Habsburg line. She became Queen of Spain by the wedding, a title she held through her twenties. In the final days of her life, Philip's claim to the Portuguese throne made her briefly Queen of Portugal as well. She died 26 October 1580, thirty years old.
